Violations in Elections, Freedom of Speech, Informal Governance ... - Freedom House publishes critical report on Georgia


"Freedom House" publishes detailed report on Georgia. At the outset of the document it is said that progress in democracy has been hindered in recent years and oligarchs have a huge impact on politics and political choices. The rule of law still restricts political interests. The document emphasizes the issue of elections and says that the elections have shadowed by the allegations of vote-buying, mostly by the ruling party. It also concerns the abuse of administrative resources and the Georgian Dream"s activists"with voters` lists, which created the intimidating environment.
The focus is on the issue of writing off debts to 600,000 citizens several days before the elections.The report speaks about Ivanishvili"s informal governance:
"The ability of the elected officials to define and implement the government policy is weakened by Ivanishvili"s informal role, which does not have a public service post , but has a significant impact on executive and legislative decisions," the document reads.
The report speaks about freedom of speech and pluralism. The case of Rustavi 2 and the decision of the European Court of Human Rights on the suspension of the judgement of the Supreme Court of Georgia is included in the report.The report also included murder case on Khorava street, attacks by high-ranking officials on non-governmental organizations, Black Sea University topic and other important issues.
