The Acting Governor of the National Bank of Georgia [NBG], Natia Turnava, presented collectible silver coins to the players of Georgia’s national football team and gold coins to head coach Willy Sagnol in recognition of their achievements at the 2024 European Football Championship.
Natia Turnava expressed that the Euro 2024 coins will serve as a lasting symbol of the Georgian team’s success and the pride of Georgian football.
“The NBG, like many leading central banks, holds exclusive rights to issue collectible coins. Traditionally, these coins commemorate significant milestones for Georgia. The success of our national football team at the European Championship is one of the most joyous and historic events, so we unanimously chose this achievement as the theme for the new collectible coin. I’m delighted to have personally handed over these coins to our players, expressing our gratitude for their outstanding performance”, - said Natia Turnava.
The NBG Board approved the issuance of these 5 GEL denomination coins in March, honoring the team’s historic victory and swift qualification for the 2024 European Championship.
The coin designs were created in collaboration with the Georgian Football Federation, with the artwork by Bacho Lagvilava.
The obverse features the Euro 2024 symbol - presented in color on the silver coin - and an image of a horseman, inspired by White George, fighting a dragon, symbolizing the battle against fear. A key interpretation of this symbol is the triumph over one’s own weaknesses, thereby achieving victory over any opponent. The brand slogan, “I am Georgia”, is inscribed, representing the shared spirit of the brand, players, and fans.
The reverse showcases the player’s jersey (in color on the silver coin), reflecting the brand’s contemporary visual style and philosophy. It also includes inscriptions of the event, denomination, and year in both Georgian and English.
Details regarding the sale of these coins will be announced soon.
The NBG has previously issued sports-themed coins, celebrating Georgian athletes’ successes in rugby, basketball, football, and the Olympic Games.
