Nino Burjanadze, the leader of the Democratic Movement, responds to the NATO Secretary General"s statement. The statement speaks about Georgia"s accession to NATO, without Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
hose, who offer NATO membership to the divided country, do not care for Georgia, - Nino Burjanadze, the leader of the Democratic Movement, stated.
"The NATO Secretary General said that NATO can use the so-called Cyprus model in relation to Georgia. Cyprus, even though it was divided in two parts, was accepted as a member by the EU in 2004. Mr. Rasmussen"s offers Georgia NATO membership. Cyprus is not a NATO member, although there are military bases of two members of NATO - the UK and Turkey.
This kind of accession to NATO means that the country will be divided and we will have to finally give up Abkhazia and the Samachablo - this is absolutely clear. Why are they offering us NATO membership and not EU membership? They do not offer this because they do not care about Georgia"s interests. Everyone wants to use our country for actions against Russia. Nobody cares that in such case Abkhazia and Samachablo will never be parts of united Georgia”, Burkanadze stated.
