Representatives of NGOs call on experienced lawyers to participate in the selection of judges to the Supreme Court.
Registration of the competition officially started today. Candidates can fill in an electronic form before 31 May.
Third sector members call on lawyers to take part in the competition so that everybody can see the difference between Chinchaladze"s clan and contemporary, educated judges.
Giorgi Gvilava, the manager of the Transparency International Georgia Program, states that the final decision after the selection stage is on the Parliament. Consequently, Gvilava says that there is a need for political will in the Parliament for objective selection.
"Neither these appointments nor this law can increase confidence. We have very few guarantees. The only thing we can do is to make the society more engaged in this process and to reveal the problems that we have with specific candidates. But in the end, everything is in the hands of the parliament, because the decision taken at the council level is in the hands of the clan. We have an expectation that the clan will be presented by a lot of people in the nomination ", said Gvilava.
Sopho Verdzeuli, director of the Human Rights Education and Monitoring Center"s Judicial and Democracy Program, focuses on transparency of the competition. According to her, it is necessary that many dignified lawyers participate in the competition.
Verdzeuli also says that at this stage the parliamentary majority is preparing a political statement in advance that it is oriented towards political consensus in the process. The competition for the selection of the judges of the Supreme Court has been officially started today.
