Khobi 2 hydroelectric power station, unveiled in Samegrelo, is one of the distinguished energy projects in Georgia - Levan Davitashvili

The Minister of Economy said the Khobi 2 hydroelectric power station, unveiled in Samegrelo, is one of the distinguished energy projects in the country.

“Today marks the launch of one of our most significant energy projects, contributing to the addition of over 1,150 MW of power to Georgia’s energy system since 2012. With 63 new hydroelectric stations implemented, this development is a crucial step towards enhancing our energy independence.

Our Government’s vision is to maximise the use of existing energy resources. Georgia has the potential for generating electricity from renewable sources, particularly through hydroelectric power. With more than 26,000 mountain rivers, the country should leverage these resources.

An important flagship project is the potential for a direct connection to the European Union via a submarine cable in the Black Sea. This initiative will enhance the appeal of our energy sector to investors”, - said Levan Davitashvili.

He also underscored the economic and social implications of the new HPP, particularly for local employment and infrastructure development. He said the HPP was anticipated to contribute GEL 2.5 million to the local budget annually and create “hundreds of jobs”.

With an installed capacity of 44.5 megawatts, the power station - developed by the Georgian Investing Group Energy - is expected to generate 202 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. The HPP ranks among the top 5 hydropower plants established since Georgia regained its independence in the early 1990s, with an investment for the first phase of the project exceeding GEL 250 million.
