At the session of the Education, Science and Youth Affairs Committee, the legislative proposal submitted by Georgian citizens Nana Machavariani and Giorgi Gogolashvili - aimed at introducing mandatory instruction of the Georgian language in higher education institutions - was reviewed.

As noted during the meeting, the teaching of the Georgian language in universities was suspended in 2005, and the university-level subject “Georgian Language” was abolished.

Committee Chairman Givi Mikanadze highlighted the symbolic significance of discussing this legislative proposal precisely on the Day of the Georgian Language, as the initiative seeks to reintroduce the compulsory study of the state language in higher education institutions: "An unfair decision was made 20 years ago. We now have the opportunity to reverse that decision in the coming weeks. Our goal is to ensure that, starting from the next academic year, based on a clear legal framework, the mandatory teaching of the Georgian language will once again become a reality in our higher education institutions".

The committee unanimously endorsed the submitted legislative proposal.
