An accusation was submitted to two individuals for the facts of illegal purchase, storage, possession and disposal of radioactive substances

Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia has charged two individuals for the facts of illegal purchase, storage, possession and an attempt of disposal of radioactive substances.

As a result of an investigation conducted by the Counterintelligence Department of the State Security Service [SSS], it was determined that a Georgian citizen had illegally purchased and stored the radioactive substance uranium, which belongs to the category of nuclear materials and is hazardous to human health. A citizen of Georgia had an attempt to sell the aforementioned nuclear material to a Turkish citizen for 3 million USD. SSS officers have detained both of them.

The detainees were charged under the Criminal Code, Article 230 of (purchase, storage, possession and disposal of radioactive substances), which as a form and measure of punishment envisages up to 10 years of imprisonment.

The Prosecutor’s Office has already applied to the court with a petition to use imprisonment for the defendants as a preventive measure.

The investigation on the criminal case is ongoing.
