Concern of International Society about media environment - Yanglang`s report and assessments in Tbilisi

The protection of human rights and the freedom of the media are the principles that have been realized under this government - responded the leader of the majority to the report by the Secretary General of the Council of Europe. Archil Talakvadze says that it is first of all the government that needs independent and critical media,

"We are well aware that first of all the government needs an independent, objective and critical media . It is clear that the government has not made any attempt to have any control over the critical media and we are not going to do it in the future, " - Archil Talakvadze said.

The National Movement claims that Rustavi 2 case is one of the clearest examples of the fact that the current government is interested in control of the media.

"It is clear that the main direction of the government is the restriction of media pluralism. The restriction of the editorial independence of the media and the clear sign of this was the attempt of attack on Rustavi 2 undertaken by Ivanishvili and Georgian Dream, " - said Akaki Minashvili, member of the UNM.

According to Giga Bokeria, one of the leaders of the European Georgia, the steps taken by the government, which relate to the limitation of media independence, threaten the country`s future and democracy.

The current situation in the media environment and media pluralism in Georgia is mentioned in the 2016 report of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, which has already been published.
