A joint document on constitutional amendments, which the President of Georgia and opposition parties agreed upon has been sent to the Georgian Dream and Venice Commission.
President Margvelashvili hopes that the ruling team will take into consideration the remarks mentioned in the joint document.
"Georgian Dream" thinks that the president`s and the opposition`s step is desperate and they view as unacceptable the consideration of the constitutional amendments without a ruling team.
Giorgi Margvelashvili and 20 opposition parties agreed that in 2020 the country should move to proportional parliamentary elections, and there should be a principle of fair distribution of the mandates, the threshold should be decreased to 3% and the parties should be allowed to form blocks. The important issues for them are the direct presidential elections and preservation of the Security Council.
The opposition thinks that if the "Georgian Dream" adopts constitutional amendment
in the third hearing without consensus, it will be responsible for the political crisis.
The ruling party is waiting for the Venice Commission`s conclusions and plans to adopt a constitutional amendment in the third hearing on September 26.
