At least226 were killed in Mexico on Thursday , as a result of a powerful earthquake. Emergency crews and ordinary people were digging with their bare hands through rubble in search of trapped survivors. Bodies of 22 children were found in the ruins of one of the schools in suburbs.

The magnitude 7.1 quake shook the capital Mexico City and surrounding areas.

44 buildings collapsed in the capital . About 2 million households are not supplied with electricity. A system of gas was damaged, resulting fires in several districts. Population was in panic.

The earthquake also appeared to have triggered an eruption of Mexico’s Popocatépetl volcano.
