24 years since the fall of Sokhumi

24 years have passed since the fall of Sokhumi. On September 16, 1993 the Abkhaz side once again violated the Sochi Agreement on Ceasefire and started to storm Sokhumi.

The fight for Sokhumi went on for 11 days and on September 27 ended with the fall of the city. On this day, chairperson of the Council of Ministers of Abkhazia Zhiuli Shartava, Guram Gabikiri, the mayor of Sokhumi and 27 members of the Council of Ministers were shot dead.
Over 14,000 people died in military confrontation in Abkhazia. 300 thousand IDPs from Abkhazia remained homeless.
