"Rustavi 2" case, judicial system, kidnapping of Mukhtarli "- critical report of experts in Brussels

Because of the influence of the government on the court , the EU has decreased Georgia"s index of democracy. The steps taken by the Georgian authorities in Brussels have been criticized on various issues. In the document prepared by experts includes the pressure on media, Rustavi 2"s case, kidnapping of Afgan Mukhtarli .
Tamar Khidasheli, one of the authors of the report, suggests that the future conclusion could be even tougher for Georgia. According to the lawyer, the case of TBC Bank and the attempt to bribe voters during the presidential election will not have a positive effect on our country"s democracy index.
Experts estimate that the kidnapping of Azerbaijani journalist remains one of the black spots for Georgia.
"The dispute continues with regard to the ownership of the independent TV channel, Rustavi 2. It was also clear during the preparation of the report that the editorial policy of the Public Broadcaster was in favor of the ruling party.

The disappearance of Azerbaijani journalist Afgan Mukhtar is one of the black spots for Georgia. During the course of the work on the report, no real consequences of this case have been revealed. There are no results of investigation yet. Political pressure on the judiciary remains a problem for all countries in the Eastern Partnership, including Georgia, where it is one of the most controversial issues. Five days ago, Georgian NGOs addressed the diplomatic corps with the joint statement about their concerns on the judicial system, "Tamar Khidasheli said.
Chairman of the European Integration Committee of the Parliament of Georgia commented on the report. Tamar Khulordava, who is in Brussels, says she does not know the report, but she says that Georgia is the leader in Eastern Partnership countries.
Khulordava also noted that the work to overcome problems and challenges in the country should continue.
