Road safety rules are changing - Georgia to tighten sanctions against driving over the speed limit

Those, who drive over the speed limit face tougher penalties in Georgia. According to the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Nino Javakhadze, the fine amount for excessive speed will double.

The agency has already prepared legislative amendments, which will be submitted to the Government and then to the Parliament.

According to the amendments, points of driver’s license will be attached to so-called smart cameras. It means that if a driver exceeds the speed limit, he/she will have to pay a double fine and at the same time, the car owner will also lose points on his/her 100-point driver license the driving.

"According to the 9 month data, unfortunately, 337 people died in a traffic accident, which is 1.5% lower than the 9 month previous year figure. But only legislative changes, an increase in the number of hidden cameras on the highways and tightening of regulations by the Ministry in general will not lead to real results unless public awareness is raised", - said Javakhadze.

According to the plan of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, by the end of the year, up to 5,000 video cameras will be launched throughout Georgia.
