Strong earthquake strikes off Indonesia’s Sumatra island

A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck off Indonesia’s Sumatra island, with strong tremors felt in the area though seismology agencies said there was no risk of a tsunami and there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

The quake was at a depth of 10 km, the U.S. Geological Survey said. Indonesia’s meteorology, climatology and geophysical agency said the quake was felt in cities in the area including Bengkulu, which was the nearest to the epicentre, and Padang.

“Up to now, there have been no reports of damage yet following the earthquake. Our modelling showed no tsunami potential from this quake”, - the agency said in a statement.
