The Party of European Socialists welcomes the high turnout during the first round of the parliamentary election in Georgia, held on 31 October. PES President Sergei Stanishev said:
“Georgia held a highly competitive elections in such difficult times. The election results so far show that the people of Georgia have chosen to continue their Euro-Atlantic path. The election law reforms adopted in advance of this election made the election process more inclusive and more transparent. We hope that Georgia will continue on this direction after the second round of the election”, - reads the statement of the party.
The PES shares the opinion of the international observers from the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights and the Parliamentary Assemblies of the OSCE, Council of Europe and NATO, that the elections were competitive and, overall, fundamental freedoms were respected.
