48 MPs from the parliamentary opposition - from the UNM, For Georgia Party, Strategy Aghmashenebeli, Lelo for Georgia, Republicans, Law and Justice, independent MPs - issued a joint statement. They appeal to the ruling team to immediately stop the aforementioned slanderous and disinformation campaign against the strategic partners of Georgia - the United States and the European Union.
“We, the representatives of the Georgian parliamentary opposition,
Recognizing the immense contribution made by the European Union and the United States of America in preserving Georgia’s statehood since the country regained its independence on April 9, 1991, as well as their support for our nation’s growth and the aspiration of our people to become a full-fledged representative of Western civilization,
We echo the strongly expressed will of the Georgian people to ensure the full integration of Georgia into the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, which was reflected in the Constitution of Georgia;
We dissociate from and denounce the Georgian Dream’s defamation and misinformation campaign against Georgia’s two biggest strategic allies, the United States of America and the European Union.
The slanderous actions of the highest party and state political officials of the Georgian Dream, as well as members of the Georgian Parliament and local self-government bodies who formally left the Georgian Dream, but actually remained an organic part of this political force, against the ambassadors of the United States and the European Union in Georgia, were particularly clear examples of this.
It is particularly concerning that some members of the judiciary are also supporting the political campaign of Georgian Dream, which alleges that the ambassadors of the United States and the European Union to Georgia attempted to enlist Georgia in the war against Russia but failed to do so, and that their failure to do so prevented them from supporting Georgia on its path to getting a candidate status for EU membership.
The letter from Bidzina Ivanishvili, which was published on July 27, 2022, confirms the meeting on March 21, 2022, which was initiated by the US Ambassador, Mrs. Kelly Degnan, but makes no mention of what was discussed during the meeting. This letter subtly reinforces the aforementioned message of Georgian Dream by making it appear as though the West wants to draw Georgia into the war. This demonstrates Bidzina Ivanishvili’s involvement in the anti-state campaign of Georgian Dream”
According to Article 78 of the Georgian Constitution, the constitutional bodies of Georgia, i.e., the Georgian Dream government, are responsible for ensuring that Georgia’s integration into the European Union and NATO is accomplished. As a result, the ruling team"s actions serve to impede this integration and are against the national and state interests of Georgia, thus separating Georgia from its Western allies and partners and leaving it alone in the face of the occupying regime, the Russian Federation.
The above-mentioned ambassadors have repeatedly said in the public that they do not and have never wanted to involve Georgia in the conflict with Russia and that such claims are untrue; yet, the disinformation campaign of Georgian Dream obstinately goes on.
We request Georgian Dream to discontinue the aforementioned smear and misinformation effort against Georgia"s strategic allies, the US and the EU, right away.
The former EU Ambassador, Carl Hartzell, and the US Ambassador to Georgia, Kelly Degnan, both have our full support. We value their dedication and efforts in assisting Georgia on the road to Western integration”, - reads the statement.
