Container ship capsizes at Ambarlı port, Istanbul

A cargo ship capsized at the Port of Istanbul, causing its cargo to tumble dramatically overboard. The vessel, named Anmah, reportedly tipped due to uneven loading of its containers, leading to concerns over maritime safety standards.

The incident was captured on CCTV footage disseminated by Turkey’s Directorate General for Maritime Affairs. The footage showcases the ship rolling unceremoniously onto its side, just narrowly avoiding personnel who were present nearby.

According to local accounts, the Anmah had been improperly loaded, affecting its balance and stability. “The ship tipped because of an imbalanced loading of the cargo”, stated the governor’s office, encapsulating the underlying issue leading to the capsizing.

Fortunately, all 15 crew members were reported to have escaped from the vessel without grave injuries. Local reports noted, “all 15 crew members escaped without coming to serious harm”, highlighting the relatively fortunate outcome of the situation. Of the crew, ten individuals were rescued by aid workers, with five opting to jump directly overboard and swim to safety.
