The leader of the Parliamentary Majority, Irakli Kobakhidze, delivered a report on the progress made in implementing the 12-point plan established by the European Commission. During a press conference, he provided a comprehensive overview of the stages involved in prioritizing and implementing the plan, addressing both the media and the public in detail.

“We have effectively addressed the priorities outlined in the plan, which indicates our commitment to fulfilling the necessary requirements. As a result, we were prepared to receive candidate status last year. However, the decision to grant candidate status is ultimately a political one, and its outcome in December remains uncertain. Nonetheless, based on the factual progress we have made, Georgia undoubtedly deserves to be granted candidate status”, - said Irakli Kobakhidze.

He addressed the Government’s actions and highlighted the legislative amendments carried out by the Parliament to enhance the effectiveness of institutions. These changes encompassed reforms in the judiciary, electoral system, and public service. He also mentioned the implementation of anti-corruption measures, efforts towards de-oligarchization, combating organized crime, fostering a favorable media environment, promoting human rights, advancing the state concept of gender equality, engaging civil society, appointing the ombudsman, promoting depolarization, and ensuring the enforcement of judgments from the European Court of Human Rights.

Furthermore, the leader of the Parliamentary Majority discussed the demands put forth by the European Commission and outlined the forthcoming steps to be taken in order to address these requirements in the coming months.

“In summary, there are 18 specific requirements outlined in the European Commission’s report, with 10 of them focused on improving implementation practices. Substantial legislative changes have already been made, and now the emphasis is on properly implementing these laws in practice.

Two recommendations pertain to consultations with the Venice Commission and the selection of officials. Another recommendation concerns the election of council members, while one focuses on the development of an action plan. The report advises against adopting a law in two specific cases related to de-oligarchization and the Central Election Commission, and consultations will be held on these matters. Considering all these points, it is evident that no one can accuse us of not taking action. The Government, in collaboration with the Parliament, has fulfilled all 12 priorities presented by the European Commission”, - added rakli Kobakhidze.
