The ultimate goal is membership of the European Union, so now is the time for political leaders to enforce the will of the people and implement reforms quickly, said the EU Ambassador to Georgia in his speech at Freedom Square.

“Congratulations! Today is a historic day, 27 states of the European Union unanimously decided to grant Georgia candidate status.

I congratulate the political leaders, civil servants, I congratulate the civil society, I congratulate the media, but above all, I congratulate the population of Georgia, who faithfully supports the integration into the EU.

The voice of the people of Georgia is clearly heard in the EU, just like here and now I hear you. Today’s decision is to appreciate the efforts made by each of you. This is definitely a step forward, but the ultimate goal is EU membership.

Therefore, now is the time for political leaders to enforce the will of the people and implement reforms quickly. “Strength is in unity!” is written on the state coat of arms of Georgia. This is our main message today, now is the time to unite for the European future.

Each of you creates an independent history of Georgia. EU membership will bring peace, stability and economic prosperity for you, your families and future generations. In turn, the unique culture and traditions of Georgia will add diversity to the European Union.
