The World Health Organization has declared Georgia a malaria-free country

The World Health Organization [WHO] has declared Georgia a malaria-free country.

“WHO has officially certified Georgia as malaria-free.

Congratulations, Georgia! This achievement was possible thanks to sustained investment, dedication of the health workforce and targeted efforts in prevention, early detection and effective treatment of all malaria cases.

With Georgia’s certification, WHO Europe takes another step closer to becoming the 1st malaria-free region in the world.

For those unfamiliar - certification of malaria elimination is the official recognition by WHO of a country’s malaria-free status. It is granted when a country provides rigorous and credible evidence demonstrating that indigenous malaria transmission by Anopheles mosquitoes has been fully interrupted nationwide for at least 3 consecutive years”, - writes Hans Kluge, the Regional Director of WHO Europe.
