A 35-km section of the 85-km, 4-lane Kakheti Highway covering the route from Tbilisi to Sagarejo has opened today

Today, we are inaugurating a 35-km freeway of 4-lane Kakheti Highway’s 85-km section, which covers the area from Tbilisi to Sagarejo, a very important step toward the implementation of the overall project linked to the construction of Kakheti Highway, said the Prime Minister of Georgia at the opening of the first 35-km section of 4-lane Kakheti Highway.

“As little as 2 months ago, we opened the 18-km freeway of Bakurtsikhe-Tsnori. Today, again in Kakheti, we are celebrating a very important success in this direction. The new freeway bypasses four densely populated villages and towns, in this way fully reducing traffic in these settlements, ensuring the highest road safety standards, cutting travel time in half, and tripling transport throughput. This road is also part of the international transit corridor linking Georgia to Azerbaijan. And all this further increases its importance.

After the completion of all Kakheti Highway sections, it will take only 80 minutes to travel from Tbilisi to Telavi.

Well-developed international-standard road infrastructure is key to economic growth, regional development, stronger mobility, social and cultural ties. Such roads reduce travel time and distance, offer us reliable, safe travel routes, improve international and interregional ties, in this way facilitating the development of local and international tourism, creating new economic opportunities for the population. Alongside economic and tourism development, such roads are also important for international security and stability. Thanks to its strategic location, Georgia is a natural bridge between Europe and Asia. The shortest route between the East and the West passes through our country. And, needless to say, given existing regional crises, the relevance of the Middle Corridor is growing. Such projects help strengthen our country’s function in this regard. Safe and reliable alternative trade and transport routes acquire decisive importance for international stability. Given this equation, we will continue developing our highways in order to strengthen Georgia’s competitiveness and its function of a safe transit corridor.

The results of the Georgian Government’s efforts are evident, as confirmed by simple figures-as of today, road transport uses 341 km of freeways in Georgia’s territory. Some 282 km of East-West International Highway is already built. The construction of Rikoti Freeway, the project of the century, is nearing its finalization, and so is the cutting of the main Kvisheti-Kobi Connector and 9-km vehicle tunnels. Work continues to complete the construction of both tunnels and a 23-km freeway, also toward the development of Kakheti Highway.

For comparison, by 2012, just 68 km of highways was built. Today, however, 4 times as much has been unveiled, i.e. 341 km of highway roads this year alone. Overall, about 90 km of highway roads will open, of which 60 km is already used by vehicles. This means that, this year alone, more highway roads will open in our country than operated prior to 2012. These achievements show that we are doing everything for tapping into Georgia’s full international transport potential, upgrading connectivity, shaping the country into a regional logistic hub, encouraging tourism and business opportunities, and economically empowering the population. These outcomes are a result of the work of scores of people”, - said Irakli Kobakhidze.

Tbilisi-Sagarejo Freeway is in full compliance with the modern standards of road traffic safety. The road"s construction was financed with 533,502,661 GEL from the state budget. The opening of the freeway was attended by representatives of Georgia"s executive, legislative, and local authorities, and business.
