Construction of the Republican Hospital begins - the project implementation period is set to be approximately 4 years

Today, we are launching construction that will breathe new life into the Republican Hospital and its great lasting traditions. The new concept for the development of the Republican Hospital, developed based on recommendations from professional international experts, seeks the full renovation of the existing territory, Prime Minister of Georgia stated in his speech at today’s presentation of the Republican Hospital’s plan.

As the Head of Government pointed out, the clinic, boasting a history of half a century, has been a true flagship in every branch of medicine for decades.

“In fact, we are staring to build a new Republican Hospital. Academician Nikoloz Kipshidze Clinic boasts a history of half a century. It opened in 1973 as one of the largest multifunctional hospitals in the region. For decades, departments specializing in different directions operated and distinguished representatives of medicine worked here. The clinic has nourished scores of professional over the decades. It also served as a powerful educational institution, the learning base of the Tbilisi State Medical Institute, with 14 clinical/academic departments operating. For years, the Republican Hospital was a real flagship in every branch of medicine. As a rule, it was here that innovations, innovative approaches or methods were introduced for the first time in Georgia. In the most difficult period of reclaiming independence, it served as the main medical facility in the country.

Today, we are launching construction that will breathe new life into the Republican Hospital and these great lasting traditions. The new concept for the development of the Republican Hospital, developed based on recommendations from professional international experts, seeks the full renovation of the existing territory, its buildings/facilities, and infrastructure, also the construction of new blocs and recreation areas, and this is also important for the proper development of infrastructure as a whole.

In the past, we had a conversation as to how this territory could be used for non-medical purposes. However, we eventually reconsidered this decision, and I believe that the entire territory should be used for medical purposes. And all this will serve the needs of the Tbilisi Medical University, of course”, - said ," Irakli Kobakhidze.

As he emphasized, the rehabilitation/renovation works will cover a total of about 100,000 m2.

“For construction, environmentally clean and modern building technologies will be used. Consequently, our citizens will enjoy quality medical services in a comfortable and functionally streamlined modern environment. It should be underlined that the rehabilitation/renovation works will be carried out without halting the clinic’s operation. As you know, this point was very important to the medical personnel, a legitimate request, and we have taken it into consideration in full.

Services will be developed, and a modern-standard central blood bank will be created, and so will be learning and conference spaces. A facility with 250 beds will be built to focus on specialized hi-tech medical services, such as organ transplantation, heart surgery, etc. A special place will be reserved for oncology, and a department of nuclear and laser medicine equipped with the latest technologies will be created. A new modern-standard children’s infectious diseases bloc will be built, and GMP-standard medication storage facility will also be put in place there.

After completion, the Republican Hospital will become a powerful modern multifunctional state clinic with at least 700 beds, where thousands of doctors and personnel will take care of our citizens" health, and not only. I want to congratulate you on the launch of this important project. I reiterate that the implementation of this project will breathe new life into the Republican Hospital, the University Clinic, also promoting the further development of medicine in Georgia”, - concluded the Prime Minister.
