Oxford University highlights NBG`s fintech initiatives in new international publication

The National Bank of Georgia`s [NBG] work in fintech and digital money development has been featured in a new international volume published by Springer Nature, Tokenisation of Money: From Fiat Currencies to Stablecoins.

The chapter, titled From Stability Guardians to Innovation Architects: The Transformation of Monetary Authorities in the Digital Age, was authored by University of Oxford researchers Kamila Nigmatulina, Kyeyoung Shin and Pinar Ozcan.

The study examines how the role of central banks is evolving alongside the development of digital finance. The NBG is presented as one of three international cases, alongside the National Bank of Kazakhstan and the Hong Kong Monetary Authority.

The section devoted to Georgia discusses the National Bank’s fintech strategy, Georgia`s role within the Middle Corridor and the tokenized deposits initiative.

The authors note that the NBG`s fintech strategy supports the development of modern financial infrastructure, responsible innovation and competition, cross-border cooperation, and Georgia`s emergence as a regional fintech hub. The publication also presents the tokenized deposits and certificates of deposit project, which enables financial institutions to test new products in the controlled environment of the NBG`s Regulatory Sandbox.

The inclusion of the NBG`s experience as a dedicated case study in an international academic publication represents an important achievement. It strengthens the international visibility of Georgia`s fintech ecosystem and presents the country as an active participant in the global discussion on the digital transformation of central banking.
