30 pro-LGBT NGOs appeal to pro-EU parties in Romania’s Parliament to boycott Călin Georgescu and nationalist parties

30 NGOs appeal to the pro-European political parties “to draw a cordon sanitaire in front of the extremist wave for this Sunday’s parliamentary elections, to mobilize to combat the rise of the extreme right and to defend the rights and freedoms of Romanians”, it says in a statement sent to G4Media.ro.

“The anti-Western candidate Călin Georgescu won the 1st round of the presidential elections on November 24. The representatives of civil society addressed an Appeal to the candidates for the parliamentary elections on December 1 with 9 demands, including combating disinformation from the online environment, increased protection against motivated crimes of hatred, respecting the rights of young people, women, minorities.

“Fundamental rights and freedoms are at risk in Romania. Today more than ever! Challenges such as Russia"s war against Ukraine, the increase of Russian influence in public life, the rise of populism and extremism in the political environment, the lack of credibility of the political class, economic problems that increase the personal insecurity of citizens contribute to the increase of uncertainties and vulnerabilities faced by women, adolescents and young people, LGBTI people, people living with HIV and, with them, the whole society”, - reads the statement.
