The 2024/25 season is going to be special for Paris Saint-Germain. The team is almost guaranteed the title of French champion. But more importantly, PSG officially signed Khvicha Kvaratskhelia from Napoli in the winter transfer window and this move turned out to be a very successful transfer.
Khvicha quickly adapted to the Parisian grand and is showing brilliant play with the team. The chances on the main European club stage are noteworthy. It can be safely said that at the moment, PSG is among the main favorites to win the Champions League.
Rustavi 2 spoke with Javier Pastore, a former player of the Parisians and the Argentine national team.
PSG’s current form
Javier Pastore is pleased with the Parisians’ form and particularly notes the prospects of the PSG’s young team:
“We see PSG, which has a lot of ambition. This is a young team where the coach has found the best versions of the players. They have a very promising move, they have practically already won Ligue 1 and are now fighting to win the Champions League, which is a long-awaited title for the club. When a team wins many matches in a row, it boosts confidence and with such good players, it is practically impossible to lose confidence”.
What did the previous generation of the team lack to achieve European success?
Javier Pastore defended the honor of the Parisian grandee from 2011 to 2018 and became one of the symbols of the new era of the club. However, at that time, PSG failed to win the Champions League. We asked him about the reason for this.
“I lived the beginning of a new era at PSG, where we could say that we had a lot of good things, the club had grown a lot. We always played with the desire to win the Champions League, but we were missing a certain leap to reach the final. We always had a great team, but in the end, this is football, where the fate of the winner and the loser is decided by small details. I think we were a little bit unlucky”.
Current PSG’s Champions League chances
According to Javier Pastore, the Parisians have everything to achieve European triumph this year.
“This team has raised a lot of expectations. They are very popular and have won many matches in a row. I think they have everything to reach the final and then dream of winning it to make the fans happy”.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia – PSG’s new star
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s move to Paris Saint-Germain had a big publicity in Europe. Pastore had highly praised the Georgian star.
“He is a very talented and mature player who always makes good decisions on the pitch. I liked him a lot when he was playing in Naples, and now, with other top-level teammates, it is very difficult to stop him in attack. Khvicha brings a lot of positive things to the team. He is a star, but he acts like an ordinary player, and these personal qualities add a lot to the team and his game. Kvaratskhelia is a phenomenon!”
Drama in Liverpool
Paris Saint-Germain defeated Liverpool in a tense penalty shootout in their last Champions League match. Javier also spoke about that game.
“I experienced a lot of emotions in that match. The players showed that they wanted to win with spectacular play and control. Anything could have happened in the penalty shootout, but they showed stability and confidence to turn the game in their favor. I was very nervous, but it’s one of those games that everyone enjoys watching”.
Javier Pastore played more than 250 matches for Paris Saint-Germain. His career was significantly hampered by injuries, but he still managed to become a five-time French champion. Along with PSG, he also played for “El Flaco”, “Palermo” and “Roma”, and was capped 29 times by the Argentine national team.
