Conductor Vakhtang Machavariani dies at the age 74. A Georgian composer and conductor, he was the son of composer Aleksi Machavariani.

Throughout his career, Vakhtang Machavariani conducted about 80 orchestras, among them the most prominent symphony orchestras of the world.

Since 1996 Vakhtang Machavariani is GMD and Principal Conductor of the Georgian State Symphony Orchestra in Tbilisi, Georgia. Since 2011 Vakhtang Machavariani performs regularly with the Presidential Symphony Orchestra of Turkey. In 2022 Machavariani wrote and conducted a recording of a new orchestral work, his symphonic poem entitled “Mariupol”, named after the Ukrainian city and “dedicated to the defenders and heroes of Mariupol”.
