Sandro Bazadze becomes the first fencer in Georgian history who win the World Championship

For the first time in Georgia’s fencing history, Georgian fencer Sandro Bazadze has become a world champion.

At the ongoing 2025 FIE Fencing World Championships in Tbilisi, the 31-year-old athlete triumphed convincingly in the men’s epee final, defeating French contender Jean-Philippe Patrice with a score of 15:9.

This victory marks Bazadze’s 3rd medal at the World Championships, following a bronze in 2022 and a silver in 2023. He is also a 2-time European champion, winner of the European Games.

The 2025 FIE Fencing World Championships started in Tbilisi on July 22. Georgia is hosting the event for the first time in its history. 1,205 athletes from 120 countries are participating.
