Twelve countries have already joined the German initiative to abolish the rule of consensus decision-making in the European Union.

“Georgian Dream” believes that if this initiative is implemented, the European Union will, almost guaranteed, transform from an association of equal members into a union managed by large states.

According to them, candidate countries are being offered not equal membership in the existing union, but rather a pre-altered system in which their rights and levers of influence will be restricted.

“When the EU was being created, equality and equal rights were recognized as one of the main principles and values, so that we would not get a result where large states would have levers of influence over small countries and, in fact, have the means to directly oppose their national interests.

It is very regrettable that the Euro-bureaucracy and Brussels have decided - parallel to the declared enlargement process - to introduce direct segregation among members, and whether it is a newly joined state or a relatively small country, to create conditions that imply taking on as many obligations as possible for these states, but on the other hand, stripping them of all rights, which poses a direct threat to state sovereignty”, - said Tornike Cheishvili, First Deputy Chairman of the Parliament’s Legal Issues Committee.
