As a result of ongoing archaeological excavations at the Gonio-Apsaros Fortress in Adjara, a semi-autonomous bronze coin from Neocaesarea, minted in a small edition and dating back to 184–185 AD, has been discovered for the first time in Georgia.
Thanks to this unique discovery resulting from archaeological excavations supported by the Government of Adjara and conducted by the Cultural Heritage Protection Agency under the Ministry of Culture of Adjara, another significant artifact has been added to Georgia’s numismatic collection. In 2026, archaeological expeditions were carried out on the territories of the Gonio-Apsaros, Petra, and Kaviani fortresses, and research works revealed numerous important artifacts, among which coins of exceptional scientific and numismatic value are particularly noteworthy.
Archaeological research continues in the region. At this stage, excavations are underway on the territory of the Pichvnari ancient burial ground, and in parallel, works are planned to be carried out at various locations across the Adjara region.
