The Public Defender demands the change of drug policy. Ucha Nanuashvili`s appeal was discussed at the Constitutional Court today. The Ombudsman requests the court to recognize the norm according to which a penalty is prescribed as a form of sentence for consumption, purchase and storage of small quantities of drugs for personal consumption as unconstitutional,.
According to the plaintiff`s claim, the sanction is not in conformity with the gravity of the committed act.
The Ombudsman`s initiative is supported in the third sector. The organizations that demand decriminalization of light drugs, believe that existing repressive policies should be changed.
The ruling team also ackowledges that the drug policy is too strict and needs to be changed.. According to the chairperson of the Healthcare Committee, the amendments to the law will be initiated in the legislative body by the end of May.
