Council of Religions at the Public Defender`s Office prepared recommendations for state agencies, educational institutions and media organizations. The discussion of the rights of different religious groups was held with the participation of religious groups and civil society representatives.
One of the recent issues was the disputed building in the village of Mokhe and the decisions on the mosque construction in Batumi. According to the Public Defender, the government is not neutral when it comes to non-dominant religious groups.
"The State is obliged to provide freedom of religion. Including the requirement for issuing permits for the construction of a specific purpose buildings. Unfortunately, this agreement and the obligation of the State has not been fulfilled, as well as in connection with Mokhe Commission. The original purpose was to find out the origins of this building, unfortunately it was not achieved and in fact such a decision could raise more question marks regarding whether the state is neutral when it comes to such decisions, "- Ucha Nanuashvili said.
