Ombudsman and NGOs demand more transparency in the process of selection of candidates for position of judge in Strasbourg Court

The Public Defender and the NGO sector are demanding more transparency in the process of selection of candidates for the position of a judge in the Strasbourg Court. Ucha Nanuashvili has some questions regarding the composition of the selection committee.

At the next stage, 24 candidates will continue to compete for the position of the in the European Court of Human Rights.

" Regarding the composition of the selection committee, I would like it comprise more independent candidates, especially from the civil sector. Instead, new members have been added from the court system, which is not comprehensible for me, "- said the Public Defender Ucha Nanuashvili.

According to the Program Manager of the NGO Transparency International- Georgia, Giorgi Gvilava, the process must be transparent.

"This process has led to the fact that we finally got rejected from the European Court and, unfortunately, it has badly affected the country"s image. Today we are facing similar risks and our call is to make the process mo0re transparent , "- said Giorgi Gvilava.

According to Zaza Khatiashvili, Chairman of Georgian Bar Association, if the candidates  fail for the second time, it will be an unprecedented event.
