Church damaged in Marneuli - clergyman suspects interests of certain individuals

Broken window glasses, damaged doors and outdoor lighting - this is what the clergy saw in St. George`s church. The head of the church says that it is the third time that this church is damaged, but the facts have not yet been disclosed. The cleric suspects that the destruction of the shrine is in the interest of specific individuals and is done intentionally. A church in Marneuli, which was built in the nineteenth century, has a status of cultural heritage.

Investigative activities were held in St. George`s Church and in the nearby territory.

The diocese of Marneuli and Huzbaz issued a statement sayin that it was a vandal and barbaric act. They say that such actions in Marneuli district, where there is a multinational settlement are aimed to incite religious hatred.

Investigation into the incident is under way under Article 259 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which implies damage or intentional destruction of a cultural heritage monument.
