The European Parliament members have responded to an open letter sent by NGOs in which the organizations demand the reaction of the European structures to the constitutional amendments.
European MPs urge the Georgian authorities to conduct a dialogue and exercise political will. They also do not rule out that these processes will be included in the European Parliament report.
"It is very worrying to get a draft law after two hearings without taking into account the opinions of the opposition. When more than 30 NGOs send us a letter, we are obliged to react. We urge the majority to exercise political will and change the situation. We plan to prepare a new report next year. Of course, we will look at the situation and reflect it in the report, "said a member of the European Parliament, the rapporteur on Georgia, Andrei Mamikins.
Members of the European Parliament advise Georgian lawmakers to move from monologue to dialogue regime.
"I think it would be better to postpone the last hearing. You call it technical, but it is not technical. This is a political decision which should be based on consensus.
Let me remind you of your President`s statement, where he said that the decision was made with a zero consensus.
My message is like this: Do not be quick, dialogue is always better than monologue, get consultations with the Venice Commission. Do not think that these processes will not be reacted by the EU, "- said Petras Austrevicus, Member of the European Parliament.
According to the MEPs, the adoption of constitutional amendments without consensus will be a negative message from the Georgian side to the EU.
