Sexual violence remains one of the most serious forms of gender-based violence in Georgia - GYLA

Sexual violence remains one of the most serious forms of gender-based violence in Georgia. According to the Young Lawyers Association report, the number of cases of sexual violence in January 2021 increased by 5% compared to the previous year.

“Existing legislation and practice do not provide effective, gender-sensitive mechanisms for sexual violence. Justice for women who are victims of violence is inaccessible and / or difficult to access.

Cases of sexual violence in January 2021 increased by 5% compared to 2020. This year, the public became aware of a number of serious cases of sexual offenses, the victims of which are minors. The facts of sexual violence against minors and the grave consequences show that it is problematic to investigate sexual violence against girls under the age of 16 and to qualify the crime correctly”, - reads the report.
