The Prime Minister of Georgia has released a statement on the 32nd anniversary of the April 9 tragedy.
“On April 9, 1989, the Georgian people loudly declared their unwavering decision to restore independence.
The brutal confrontation with the will of the people - the dispersal of a peaceful demonstration by the Soviet army - turned into a turning point, which determined the victory of the idea of independence not only in Georgia but also in other Soviet republics.
April 9 will always remain a symbol of self-sacrifice for the homeland and, at the same time, freedom and unity. That is why today we remember the names of those who fell heroically - with pain and at the same time with pride”, - writes Irakli Garibashvili.
