In 2020, the number of deaths in Georgia equaled 50 537. Diseases of the circulatory system (43.8%), neoplasms (16.0%) and diseases of the respiratory system (7.9%) are the dominant causes of death, Georgian National Statistics Office reports.
In 2020, new cause of death has been added to the International Classification of Diseases 10th Revision by World Health Organization, “U07.1 - COVID-19, virus identified”. In Georgia 2 587 persons died from COVID-19 in 2020, equaling 5.1% in total deaths.
Causes of death vary with age. Certain disorders originating in the perinatal period are dominant among children under-5. At the age of 5-39, Injury, poisoning and certain other consequences of external causes prevail, as the risk of accidents is relatively higher for these age groups. At the age of 40 and above, the dominant causes of death are diseases of the circulatory system and neoplasms.
