Archaeologists found tomb of Georgian King Levan Bagrationi in the Gremi Temple

The tomb of Georgian King Levan Bagrationi found in the Gremi Archangel Cathedral. The Tomb was found by the archeological expedition of the Georgian National Museum.

The recovered remains will undergo forensics both in Georgia and specialized laboratories abroad, for full confirmation of their identity.

Remains of King Levan of Kakheti were expected to have been buried at the Gremi church built under his auspices, however historians had no specific data on the whereabouts of the tomb at the monument.

The archeological works are supported by the Georgian Patriarchate and the Diocese of Nekresi, the descendants of the Bagrationi family, as well as an initiative group composed of business circles working in the Kakheti region.

Levan Bagrationi reigned in the Kingdom of Kakheti for 54 years (1518-1574). Historical sources say that he was supposed to be buried in the complex of the Temple of the Archangels in Gremi, built by his efforts, but the specific location of the resting place was unknown.
