Our law does not oblige us to allow the Public Defender of Ukraine to enter the prisoner - Justice Minister

Georgian law does not provide for the entry of the Public Defender of Ukraine, we have no obligation to do so. Such a statement made today the Minister of Justice when asked why the entry of the Ukrainian Ombudsman to Mikheil Saakashvili was denied.

“The Georgian legislation does not provide for the entry of the Public Defender of Ukraine and there is no need for that, we have no obligation to do so.

Consequently, when a prisoner is in a medical facility, we are obliged to do our best to protect his health to the end, and as I have already told you, for these reasons, the Public Defender has not been allowed yet.

Also, a letter has been received through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and naturally, we will definitely return the reply. In the previous case, when Ludmila Denisova was present and made a one-sided statement, it would probably have been good if we had met for her to listen to our position and take into account the position of both sides, because the first time she was in the 12th facility and came out, she made only a one-sided statement and did not ask us anything”, - explained Rati Bregadze.
