The United States Department of State has published the 2023 Terrorism Report, which assesses the measures taken by Georgia, along with other countries around the world.
“The document positively assesses the country’s efforts to improve land border, maritime and aviation security, which have been manifested, among other things, in the introduction of new systems and participation in international exercises.
According to the report, in October, the Georgian Border Police launched a special electronic facial recognition program. Additionally, significant segments of the Georgian state border were equipped with a 24/7 video surveillance system. The report also positively assessed the implementation of a new mobile surveillance system by the Border Police, which was implemented with the support of the US and the European Union and contributed to strengthening the surveillance and detection capabilities along the so-called Green Border.
The report highlights that the Boarding Team of Georgian Border Police Coast Guard once again participated in the NATO-led maritime anti-terrorist operation - “Sea Guardian” as an operational partner. The document notes that the development of the Integrated Border Management Strategy and Action Plan for 2023-2027 has been completed. It also highlights that Georgia has joined The UN Countering Terrorist Travel Programme, which aims to prevent, detect and investigate terrorist crimes and related movements using Advanced Passenger Information and Passenger Name Record system data.
The report also states that Georgia regularly participates in the sharing of documents and passenger information within the scope of the INTERPOL, including stolen and lost travel documents.
The document also notes that Georgia actively cooperates at the international, regional and bilateral levels on counter-terrorism issues”, - says the MIA.
