Mamuka Charkviani dies at 69

Georgian musician Mamuka Charkviani has died at the age of 69. His sister, Tako Charkviiani, confirmed this information on Facebook.

Mamuka Charkviani completed his studies at Tbilisi’s 61st school in 1972. In 1977, he graduated from the Faculty of Philology at Tbilisi State University. In 1977 - 1979, he worked as artistic director at the Metekhi Theatre. In 1982 - 1992, he served as deputy director of the G. Leonidze Literature Museum. In 1992, he worked as an adviser and consultant in the President`s Office. From 1993, he resumed his musical career.

Charkviani released several albums and received numerous awards, including the first prize at the Song Festival "Liga" in the Georgian traditional song category for "Green Branches" (1996), the 20th Century`s Best Song Prize for "Higher and Higher" (1999), and a Gold Disc in the "Song of the Year" category for his songs "You`re No Longer Mine", "Spring", "April" and "Mother`s Turn".

Mamuka Charkviani was honoured with awards from the World Association of Georgian and Jewish Women and received special prizes at jazz festivals for his songs "Blues" and "Woman on the Shore".
