By government decision, Georgian Technical University (GTU) will no longer merge with Tbilisi State University (TSU). In addition, in line with the One City - One Faculty principle, GTU will be transformed into a purely technical university. Accordingly, admissions for non-technical specialties will no longer be announced for the next academic year. This decision was made by Prime Minister of Georgia following a meeting with representatives of the GTU, together with Givi Mikanadze, Minister of Education, Science and Youth.

As the Head of Government of Georgia stated during a media briefing after the meeting, an agreement was reached with the university`s representatives that in the future only those disciplines that were taught at the Technical University prior to the 1990s will remain. Admissions for non-technical programs will not be opened for the upcoming academic year.

"Representatives of the Technical University (GTU) once again confirmed that the university fully supports the changes envisaged by the higher education reform concept of the Government of Georgia. This includes plans for qualitative renewal of university infrastructure, the One City - One Faculty’ principle, strengthening universities in the regions, a fundamental transition to the 3+1 study program model, strengthening the link between teaching and research, improving the human resource policies and introducing a new funding model. We had very interesting discussions on these issues. The support of the GTU representatives for the reform is very important to us. We agreed that GTU will no longer merge with TSU. In the future, only those disciplines that were taught before the 1990s will remain at the GTU. Furthermore, admissions will no longer be announced for disciplines that were not part of the university`s curriculum prior to the 1990s. Accordingly, non-technical study programs will remain at the university over the next two years in a gradual phase-out mode. The two universities will not merge and as for non-technical fields, they will remain in a phase-out process. Therefore, starting from this year, admissions will no longer be announced for the relevant specialties at the GTU. This is a joint decision we have agreed upon", - said Irakli Kobakhidze.

He thanked the representatives of GTU, its leadership, academic staff and members of the Academic Council: "The discussions that took place were very valuable. They were substantial and meaningful, and we are pleased that we reached a unified decision on the most fundamental issues".
