In 2012–2025, a significant increase in production and productivity was recorded in numerous areas of agriculture - Ministry

An assessment of recent developments in Georgia`s agricultural sector should consider not only changes in the production of individual crops and livestock products, but also trends in productivity, shifts in the composition of agricultural output, and the sector’s expanding export potential.

According to data from Geostat, the National Statistics Office of Georgia, the production of several key agricultural commodities increased substantially between 2012 and 2025. The most notable growth was recorded in viticulture and tree-nut production. Grape production increased from 144.0 thousand tonnes to 348.9 thousand tonnes, while hazelnut production rose from 24.7 thousand tonnes to 49.3 thousand tonnes. Over the period under review, grape production therefore increased by 142%, while hazelnut production almost doubled.

Tree-nut exports also demonstrated particularly strong growth during the period under review. In the 2025/2026 marketing year, Georgia exported 18.5 thousand tonnes of hazelnuts, of which 12.5 thousand tonnes were shipped to European Union markets, including Italy, Spain, Germany, France, Greece, the Czech Republic, and Poland. In 2025/2026, the total value of Georgia’s tree-nut exports reached USD 188.5 million.

Growth was also recorded across a range of other perennial crops. Walnut production increased from 4.8 thousand tonnes to 7.8 thousand tonnes, while apple production rose from 45.0 thousand tonnes to 62.9 thousand tonnes. Total fruit production, excluding grapes and citrus, increased from 157.9 thousand tonnes to 215.8 thousand tonnes.

Significant changes were recorded in the production of livestock products. Between 2012 and 2025, egg production increased from 474 million to 692.9 million units. Pork production rose from 11.8 thousand tonnes to 32.8 thousand tonnes, poultry meat production from 11.7 thousand tonnes to 25.6 thousand tonnes, and beef production from 16.2 thousand tonnes to 24.2 thousand tonnes.

Particularly strong growth has been observed in viticulture and winemaking. In 2025, approximately 340 thousand tonnes of grapes were processed in Georgia, representing a record level. The development of the wine industry is also clearly reflected in production and export indicators. In 2012, only 52 thousand tonnes of grapes were processed during the annual grape harvest, while approximately 40 companies were registered as wine producers. By the 2025 harvest season, the number of companies registered as wine producers had risen to nearly 500.

At the same time, Georgian wine has significantly expanded its export footprint. In 2012, Georgian wine was exported to approximately 40 countries, generating export revenues of USD 65 million. By 2025, exports had reached 71 countries, with their total value increasing to USD 268 million. Blueberry production and exports have also emerged as an increasingly important area of agricultural development. Blueberries have already become a significant new product in Georgia’s agri-food export portfolio, creating additional opportunities for market diversification and access to new international markets.

More broadly, between 2012 and 2025, the value of primary agricultural output nearly tripled. Over the same period, agri-food exports increased fourfold, exceeding USD 1.8 billion. These figures point to the scale of the economic transformation taking place in Georgia’s agricultural sector and indicate the growing export capacity and international competitiveness of Georgian agri-food products.
