The Prosecutor General’s Office of Georgia has charged the lawyer with fraudulently embezzling funds.
An investigation conducted by the General Inspection Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs revealed that a lawyer, who was defending the interests of a defendant in a case of a particularly serious crime, met with the sister of his client and promised that, despite the particularly serious sentence, a plea bargain would be signed with the defendant for a term of 3-4 years of imprisonment, for which he allegedly demanded and extorted 10,000 GEL to be handed over to high-ranking officials of the Central Criminal Police Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
To make it more convincing, the defendant assured the victim that without the consent of the Central Criminal Police Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the prosecutor's office would not have been able to sign a plea agreement and would not even consider the issue. The detainee was charged under Article 180, Part 2, Subparagraph “b” of the Criminal Code of Georgia (fraud that caused significant damage), which provides for up to 7 years of imprisonment as a form and measure of punishment.
The Prosecutor’s Office shall apply to the court within the time limit established by law with a request to use imprisonment as a preventive measure for the accused.
