Imerlishvili, Dolidze, Todua - Nino Gvenetadze Alleged Substitutes


Nino Gvenetadze, the chairperson of the Supreme Court has resigned. The President does not believe in the official reason of her resignation and demands to establish the motives that led the country"s chief judge to step down.

Unlike the Chairperson of the Supreme Court herself, Giorgi Margvelashvili openly said that the chairperson he presented was under pressure and these facts should be investigated.

According to the current constitution, the president of the country should select and submit to the Parliament a new candidate for approval. If the President has not enough time to do it, then new Constitution will be launched after the inauguration of the new president. This means that the Supreme Court Chair will be selected by the High Council of Justice.

Giorgi Margvelashvili has announced today that the selection process of the new chairman of the Supreme Court will start from Monday and he does not intend to let the High Council of Justice to select the chief judge.

Unlike the President, the Minister of Justice did not have questions about Nino Gvenetadze"s unexpected resignation.

After Nino Gvenetadze"s resignation, Judge Mzia Todua will perform the duties of the Supreme Court Chairperson at this stage.

Several persons are named as alleged successors of the chairperson of the Supreme Court, including Mzia Todua, who fulfills her duties after Gvenetadze"s resignation, Irina Imerlishvili and Ana Dolidze.

Nino Gvenetadze worked for three years and four months as the country"s chief judge. The Parliament approved the Supreme Court chair on March 20, 2015. Gvenetadze term expired in 2025.
