Parliament approved Shotadze for the post of new Chief Prosecutor

Irakli Shotadze, 32, has been confirmed by the Parliament as new chief prosecutor of Georgia for a non-renewable six-year term.

Shotadze, who served as first deputy chief prosecutor since November 2013, was approved with 82 votes to 15 on November 27.

Shotadze, who is the fourth chief prosecutor since the Georgian Dream (GD) coalition came into government in late 2012, had full backing of the GD parliamentary majority group.

Opposition MPs from the UNM and Free Democrats parties were against of Shotadze’s nomination, saying that he would not provide for de-politicization of the prosecutor’s office.

The minority did not support the candidacy of the new chief prosecutor . As opposition MPs say they do not believe in the independence of Shotadze doubt that he will refuse to use selective justice.

"The majority chose the prosecutor, who did not play against systemic corruption and the scheme, which involved the Prime Minister, who did not resist the crime. Shotadze will not investigate Rapaliants murder, Kitsmarishvili murder and Tavtukhashvili murder, "- said Sergo Ratiani.

Irakli Shotadze substituted Badashvili in this position. As the new chief prosecutor, said this predecessor, will no longer work in the prosecution, but where he will continue to work Shotadze did not specify.
