Several large-scale changes in Georgian Railway - 2026–2028 action plan envisages a reduction in travel time and a full renewal of the rolling stock

At today`s Executive Government Meeting, the Prime Minister of Georgia focused on the 2026-2028 action plan for JSC Georgian Railways, which is considering purchasing 50 new locomotives, as well as 1500 new railcars and the introduction of modern railway systems.

"As a result, operational processes will improve and, most importantly, the capacity of JSC Georgian Railways will double", - added Irakli Kobakhidze.

According to him, the annual number of passengers carried will increase from 2 to 5 million.

"We will purchase 10 new passenger trains. As a result, all mainline services will be operated with new trains. Passenger transportation will become much more comfortable and faster, both for our citizens and for visitors to the country. The annual number of passengers carried will increase from 2 million to 5 million", - noted the Head of Government of Georgia.

He also stated that, by a Government Decree, the historic Borjomi-Bakuriani railway - the so-called Coocooshka- will be rehabilitated. In addition, new routes will be added, including Tbilisi-Kutaisi and Tbilisi-Akhaltsikhe.

"Georgian Railways will be expanded with a Tbilisi-Kutaisi route. The rehabilitation of the Tbilisi-Batumi railway will be completed in August, reducing travel time from five and a half hours to 4 hours - cutting the journey between Tbilisi and Batumi by 1.5 hours… The rehabilitation of the Tbilisi-Akhaltsikhe railway will also be completed in August, as a result of which this route-suspended since 2009-will be restored. Compared to previous travel times, the journey will be reduced from 6 hours to 3 hours, effectively halving the travel time between Tbilisi and Akhaltsikhe.

We have also made a decision, which is part of the plan, regarding the rehabilitation of the historic Borjomi-Bakuriani railway, the so-called Coocooshka. Both the train itself and the railway infrastructure will undergo full rehabilitation, including the renovation of five applicable railway stations. This line has been out of operation since 2020 and according to the plan, the train will resume service for our citizens and visitors from January next year. The restoration of this railway line is also of great importance from a tourism perspective", - said Irakli Kobakhidze.
