A preparatory meeting for the Medical Radiation Protection and Safety Advisory Service (MEDAS) mission was held at the LEPL Agency of Nuclear and Radiation Safety.
Georgia will host the MEDAS mission in 2027. The mission aims to assess the compliance of existing practices related to medical exposure in Georgia with international safety standards, identify challenges in the field, and develop relevant recommendations to improve radiation protection and safety. Notably, Georgia is the first country among the Member States of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to host this mission.
The preparatory meeting was led by two experts with qualifications in medical physics, invited by the International Atomic Energy Agency. It brought together leading specialists from government institutions, educational institutions, and professional communities involved in radiation protection and safety in the medical sector.
During the meeting, participants discussed existing challenges in radiation safety, as well as matters related to the organization and implementation of the mission planned for 2027. The meeting included discussions and multilateral working sessions involving representatives of technical support organizations serving medical facilities and other professional groups.
The MEDAS mission will contribute to improving existing practices related to medical exposure in Georgia and promoting the implementation of high standards of radiation protection to ensure patient safety.
