European Parliament expresses concern about "Rustavi 2" case

The European Parliament adopted a final resolution on Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement yesterday.

In the part of the document devoted specifically to Georgia, the European Parliament expressed concern about the case of Rustavi 2. The European Parliament calls on the government to ensure media pluralism, editorial independence and guaranteed transparency of media ownership , especially prior to the 2016 parliamentary elections.

The document also focuses on the  transparency of the judiciary , which should not be politically motivated. European MPs are concerned about the "lack of accountability for the prosecution and the vague criteria, according to which prosecutors and investigators are appointed."

The European Parliament calls on the government to continue the efforts to make the court, the prosecutor"s office, the Interior Ministry and the newly formed security services independent, effective, impartial and professional.

The resolution also expressed concern about the use of pre-trial mechanism, which can be used only on special occasions, towards political figures and activists, .

The European Parliament calls on the government to end the political polarization and to carry out more transparent investigation of facts of violence against opposition.
