Capitol incident solved

A man was shot and wounded by police on Monday at the underground U.S. Capitol Visitor Center after he pointed a gun at officers, police said.

The suspect and a female bystander, who suffered wounds, were taken to the hospital, U.S. Capitol Police Chief Matthew Verderosa said at a news conference.

While the Capitol Police did not identify the suspect, the individual in custody for the incident is Larry Russell Dawson of Antioch, Tennessee. He is known to Capitol Police after interrupting the House in October. Dawson was court-ordered to stay away from the Capitol building.

After being charged with interfering with a law enforcement officer, Dawson sent the court a letter where he called himself a "prophet." He also refused to comply with court orders, saying he is only going to comply with "divine law, not civil law."

"Based on initial investigation, we believe this is an act of a single person who has frequented the Capitol grounds before. There is no reason to believe this is anything more than a criminal act," said Verderosa.

No police officers were injured, but Verderosa said it was unclear how many officers fired shots. A weapon was recovered at the scene and the suspect"s vehicle was found on Capitol grounds, the police chief said.

The District of Columbia Police Department, a separate force from the U.S. Capitol police, also called the shooting an isolated incident and said there was no threat to the public.
